Last Friday, May 6, Indian Hills Community College/Cardinal Area Welding Academy students took first place in the boys and girls divisions of the Plumber and Steamfitters Local 33’s annual High School Weld Off competition.
“This is a huge accomplishment for all these students, and I am so proud of all their hard work during and leading up to this competition,” Andy Brainard, IHCC welding instructor said. “I couldn’t be more proud.”
Cardinal Community School District students Grace Eakins, Allison Sloan, and Allee Black placed first, second and third respectively in the girls' division. Their combined scores placed them first overall.
In the boys' division, students Griffin Greiner, Chandler Pumphrey, Matt Streeby, Darrin Coffman, Gavin Warner, Konnor Sanders, and Brayden McDonough placed first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and eighth respectively. Like the girls, their combined scores placed them first overall in the division.
IHCC/Cardinal Area Welding Academy is a joint program between Indian Hills Community College, Cardinal Community School District, Fairfield Community School District, and Van Buren-Harmony Community School District.
The program gives high school juniors and seniors a head start in their college education as they complete Indian Hills’ Welding Diploma program. Students in the program graduate high school with the skills necessary to become welders. They may also continue their education at IHCC to complete an A.A.S. degree.
