Shea Swafford, Cardinal CSD's new high school wrestling head coach.

posted March 24, 2023

Cardinal Community School District promoted staff member Shea Swafford to high school wrestling head coach. His new role starts with the 2023-2024 school year.

Swafford currently serves as the middle school wrestling coach and head coach to Cardinal Community School District’s Comet Wrestling Club. He will still be very active in those organizations but will devote most of his time and energy to Cardinal’s boys and girls high school teams. Swafford also coaches MS Football and teaches MS Social Studies.

“Coach Swafford has a ton of passion and experience in the sport of wrestling,” Chris Becker, Cardinal activities director said. “When you pair that with his ability to teach kids and, more importantly, build relationships with kids, he has the perfect characteristics to be a successful head coach at whatever level he chooses.”

Swafford is a Mediapolis graduate and attended Graceland University. He wrestled at Mepo and was a state qualifier. His wrestling career continued at Graceland before coming to Cardinal to teach his passion to others.

Swafford will take over the role for Coach Dakota Miller, who resigned after the season. Cardinal thanks Miller for all of the time and effort he put into the wrestling program. The district is excited for Coach Swafford as he continues to move the program forward.

“I feel honored and excited for the opportunity to do something special here at Cardinal,” Swafford said. “I look forward to the future memories that await.”

My real endorsement of Cardinal Schools and its faculty and staff can be seen each morning when I hand them the one irreplaceable and most valuable thing in my life: my kids. No letter I write could be a greater endorsement than that simple act. I give them my kids, and I do it with a huge smile on my face because I trust them to do what they are most outstanding at: building our future.
