Earlier this month, Cardinal Community School District hosted its first career fair in five years.

"We are thrilled with that," Andrew Lehn, Cardinal High School head principal, says. "We want to expose our students to as many different professions and fields as possible before they graduate."

The career fair welcomed businesses and organizations from a wide range of industries, including agriculture, trades, education, law enforcement/military, healthcare, IT and finance, and service businesses.

Students had a chance to visit with the different fair participants, asking questions about their jobs and companies.

"There were a few exhibitors that were very interactive, like a carpentry booth and mechanic booth that brought tools the students could try using."

While this career fair was focused on the students learning about the different careers available to them, Mr. Lehn hopes in the future they can be an avenue for students to apply for internships and summer jobs.

"As we grow, we’d like students to ask those questions about internships and summer hours," Mr. Lehn says. "We’d like them to ask themselves, ‘How can this be a foot in the door?’"

Though the career fair has come and gone, students can still be thinking ahead about what they want to do after graduation.

"Finding a career is about finding what you really like doing so work is meaningful to you," Mr. Lehn advised. "Find your interest and look at what you like. If you like five different things, ask yourself, ‘How can I combine these into a career?'"

My real endorsement of Cardinal Schools and its faculty and staff can be seen each morning when I hand them the one irreplaceable and most valuable thing in my life: my kids. No letter I write could be a greater endorsement than that simple act. I give them my kids, and I do it with a huge smile on my face because I trust them to do what they are most outstanding at: building our future.
