Middle School Students Hosting Meal Packaging Event
posted March 8, 2022
Our Middle School Student Council is excited to host its first ever Meal Packaging event on Wednesday, March 9! Students in 5th through 8th grades will help our community members by packaging a planned 20,000 meals.
"When the suggestion was brought to the student council, we did not hesitate to start planning," says Amanda Jarvis, Cardinal instructional strategist II and middle school student council advisor. "The students on the council understand the need to help our community and know with COVID there has been a shortage of food. They felt this is one way to give back and even help families in our community."
Each grade level will take a 45-minute shift in the high school gym to help assemble the meal packages. Students will be shown how to package the meals and then get to work!
"We want the students to think beyond these walls and themselves," Ms. Jarvis says. "Middle school students are learning how to become part of their community, this is one way we can help them learn how to get involved."
The students are also learning new skills through this process. They worked together to write a grant letter requesting support and funding from local businesses. Thanks to the community's generosity and support, 3,333 packages (20,000 meals) will be distributed after the event. The packages will be given to senior citizens who struggle with meals, anyone who needs extra help with food, and a local food bank that Cardinal CSD is in the process of opening.
"Many people in southeast Iowa struggle with poverty, so us providing meals for them gives them one less problem they have to worry about,” shares Alexis Bissell, middle school student council president.
