Summer Learning Success with Our Elementary Phonics Program
posted August 13, 2024
This summer, our school district has been dedicated to continuing our students' education with a focus on foundational skills. In June, we trained seven of our talented elementary teachers to teach for our summer program, specifically designed for students entering 2nd and 3rd grade. The program is centered around a research-based phonics curriculum to help our young learners build strong reading skills.
Running for six weeks (ending this Thursday, August 15), the program offers students one hour of focused learning each day. Each student is provided with an iPad to support their virtual learning experience. We are thrilled to report that 33 students have participated this summer, each making strides in their reading abilities.
Our summer teachers have gone above and beyond to create an engaging and supportive learning environment. As Stefany Snyder, Cardinal literacy instructional coach, shared, "Our summer teachers are awesome, and they do a wonderful job of building a classroom-like community even though our lessons are all done virtually. They build wonderful relationships with the students and make the students feel comfortable and ready to learn."
As an added incentive, students who attend 90% or more of their lessons this summer will receive a special prize, encouraging consistent attendance and celebrating their hard work and commitment to learning.
With the program wrapping up this week, we’re excited to see the growth our students have made and look forward to continuing this important work in the future!
