Cardinal Community School District now offers students the ability to take their driver’s instruction permit test on campus.

“Our partnership with the Iowa DOT has helped six kids so far earn their driver's permit here at school, without missing school,” says Superintendent Joel Pedersen.

Middle School Principal and Director of Curriculum & Instruction Cindy Green acts as a proctor for the permit tests. Students 14 years and older need only notify the office that they’d like to test.

Mrs. Green and her team will then check with the student’s parents for permission and schedule a testing time. Tests conveniently take place during study hall. Students can test once per day, and they can attempt to pass the test as many times as they need to.

“This program not only helps the driving license stations but also our families who live in rural areas,” Mrs. Green explains. “This reduces the time that students and parents have to take to get to the driving license offices to test.”

In addition to saving students and families time, testing on campus allows students to take their permit test in a place where they are comfortable and familiar.

“I like that I got to sit in a quiet room with no one behind me because it was a little embarrassing when I had someone behind me,” says student Haylie Keasling. “It felt like they were silently judging me if I got the answers wrong.”

Student Mark Chichizola is relieved he earned his permit after testing on campus and is now looking forward to having his license and the freedoms it will bring.

“I could drive myself places that I need to go or I can run errands for my parents,”  Chichizola imagines.

Keasling is excited to earn her license but is also enjoying this time driving with her family as she learns the ropes.

“It's great having a permit," she says. "I can drive to different places with my parents or my grandparents."

Students interested in testing for their permit on campus can call or stop by the front office to set up an appointment.
