Two Cardinal Students Win 1st & 2nd Place in Art Competition

A huge congratulations to our students Alita Bossler (11th grade) and Ava Heemsbergen (9th grade)! These two students came in first and second (respectively) out of more than 30 entries in our congressional district for the Congressional Institute’s annual art competition.
Representative Dr. Miller-Meeks presented the award to Alita and recognized Ava at a special student assembly.
We are so proud of our students for their effort and creativity, and we are very thankful that our art teacher, Tina Denly, inspires and motivates her students to enter this competition.
“I was very honored and proud of my students,” Ms. Denly said. “All the hard work that they put into a project paid off.”
Both Alita and Ava were taken off guard to find out how well they’d done in the competition.
“I actually was pretty surprised that I got second,” Ava said. “I felt proud of myself for placing in the competition.”
“I was very happy that I placed but anxious to be the center of attention during an assembly,” Alita added.
Both of the girls' artwork features a building — Alita's more urban and Ava's more pastoral. Alita’s colored pencil piece was inspired by her interest in architecture, and Ava’s watercolor work was influenced by a photo she saw of a cottage.
Ms. Denly hopes the girls continue to practice their talent and find joy in the creative process.
“Always keep working hard,” she advised. “Share your work at all times — it is a gift!”
And for those students who entered the competition but didn’t place? She encourages them to never give up and keep working hard.
Alita and Ava plan to do just that. And Ms. Denly is already excited to encourage the next round of students to share their art with the world.
Congratulations again to Alita, Ava, and Ms. Denly!
